If you have ever pulled into a parking space, felt your tire bump something solid, and wondered what that concrete thing is actually called, the answer is a wheel stop.
You will also hear it called a parking block, a parking bumper, a car stop, a curb stop, a bumper block, or a parking curb. Contractors, architects, and property managers all tend to use different words for the same object, which is why searching for it can be frustrating. They are the same product.
Why it has so many names
There is no single industry-standard term, so the name usually depends on who is talking:
- Wheel stop is the most common term in specifications and construction documents. It describes what the thing does: it stops the wheel.
- Parking block and parking bumper are common among property managers and in general commercial use.
- Car stop and bumper block show up more in trade and supplier conversations.
- Curb stop and parking curb get used in some regions, though these can cause confusion because a curb is a different thing entirely (more on that below).
If you are writing a bid document or a specification, wheel stop is the safest term. It is the one most likely to be understood without ambiguity.
What it actually does
A wheel stop sits at the head of a parking space and stops the front wheel before the vehicle travels farther than it should. That prevents a few specific problems:
- Cars overhanging a sidewalk and narrowing or blocking the pedestrian path
- Bumpers and mirrors hitting a building wall, storefront glass, or a utility box
- Front tires crushing landscaping, irrigation heads, and low planters
- Vehicles creeping into a facing row of parked cars
- Vehicles rolling past a drop-off, slope, or retaining wall
It also does required work at accessible parking spaces, where a parked vehicle cannot be allowed to encroach into the access aisle or the accessible route to the building.
What it is not: curbs, bollards, and speed bumps
These get confused constantly, and they are genuinely different products with different jobs.
A curb runs continuously along the edge of a pavement or island. It defines the boundary of a driving surface and channels drainage. A wheel stop is a discrete unit inside a single parking space.
A bollard is a vertical post, usually steel or concrete-filled. It is built to stop a vehicle from entering an area at all, protecting a doorway, a storefront, a fuel pump, or a piece of equipment. A wheel stop is horizontal and low, and only positions a vehicle. It is not a security barrier.
A speed bump or speed hump spans a roadway or drive aisle to slow moving traffic. A wheel stop is not designed for a vehicle to drive over.
A parking barrier or Jersey barrier is a large freestanding traffic-control unit used to separate lanes or block access. Much larger, and a different application.
What they are made of
Wheel stops are commonly made from precast concrete, recycled rubber, or recycled plastic.
Precast concrete units are steel-reinforced and cast in a mold, then anchored to the pavement. The reinforcement matters: concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, so rebar inside the body is what keeps the unit from cracking apart under repeated impact.
Rubber and plastic units cost less up front and are lighter to handle, which is their main appeal. They also tend to fade, warp, crack, or work loose from their anchors over time, which is why they end up on a replacement cycle while concrete units typically do not. How big and how heavy are they?
For standard passenger parking, wheel stops come in 4-, 6-, and 8-foot lengths. The 6-foot unit is the most common choice for a standard commercial parking stall.
Weight is the part that surprises people. A precast concrete car stop runs roughly 105 pounds at 4 feet, 165 pounds at 6 feet, and 210 pounds at 8 feet. Heavy-duty units built for truck parking and loading docks are substantially heavier, up to about 1,100 pounds for the largest configuration.
That weight has a practical consequence most buyers do not think about until they order: freight is a real part of the cost, and a standard freight truck holds only about 42 of the heavy-duty units. It is a dense, heavy product, so delivery is planned around weight rather than volume.
At our own plant we ship roughly 7,300 wheel stops in a typical year, and orders vary widely in size. A property manager replacing failed units in one lot might order 15 to 30. A striping or paving contractor stocking up for a season commonly orders 70 to 230 at a time.
Do they need to be anchored?
Yes, and this is the single most common misunderstanding about the product.
Weight alone does not hold a wheel stop in place. Even at a few hundred pounds, repeated impact will gradually walk an unanchored unit out of position, and a stop that has shifted out of alignment is exactly the thing that becomes a trip hazard. Precast concrete units are anchored either with steel rebar pins driven through cast-in holes into the pavement, or with epoxy on surfaces where drilling is not practical.

How many does a parking lot need?
